Am turning 55 next week and just brought a new (used) 25'boat for me and my two sons to do some fishing in the Detroit River and Western Basin (Michigan waters).
Other than one charter trip a couple of years ago...we have no experience in operating a boat this size in this body of water. My plan is to take it real easy and slow to learn in a safe manner. I am humble enough to know I am ignorant and am willing to ask any question (no matter how basic)instead of being arrogant and going in blind.

I just installed a GPS/FishFinder combo and plan on putzing around the Detroit River to figure out how it works. Keeping the boat at a marina near Belle Isle. Since I still work, I need to get on the boat as late as 6pm on weekdays. Will that allow me enough time to get in some Walleye fishig and have the boat back at the dock before it gets dark?

Is there any warnings anybody could share to help me avoid the most common mistakes that newbies make? Would it be bad form to ask another experienced boater/fisherman to allow us to follow them to a general area that is a good fishing location as long as we keep well out of their way?

Finally, will we need other licenses than a valid Michigan Fishing License. Would you recommend getting trout stamps...I heard there are some lakers and salmon in these waters. Thanks Tony L. (Close to Cranberry) We limited on nice fish in 2 hours drifting 18 24 feet of water with weapons. Orange beads with gold #4 blades has had their number the last two weekends.
