Fish...probably the best place to start:

Are you Shore or boat fishing?

What part of lake are you targeting?

6-7ft spinning rod medium action, 6-8 lb test line , nightcrawlers , from boat drift/cast with ole favorite "erie deries".cast count in seconds 1000-1 1000-2 1000-3 etc. crank slow and then pull rod slow , when you hit one you'll feel a lil extra weight or a subtle "thump !". walleye fishing from shore dont work in the western basin check out some headboats or charters.hope this helps.

Fish,

That's only in the summer. Fall & Early Spring are prime time for the shore people. All the piers are in their prime for the night bite (1 hr before sundown thru morning). The lures of choice this past fall have been Husky Jerks (size 10 thru 14) in any color with an orange belly. Lakeside, Catawba, & Lorain piers were doing pretty good, while Huron was sporatic. Late spring thru early fall, you need to be out in a boat.

We are planning on coming up Starting in March or April we have a 18 ft and a 25 ft boat. Would like to know what bait to use starting then. Just found out we will be coming up and fishing the West Basin.

2 different sets of equipment required to drift and troll. Trolling requires bait cast reels/ preferably with line counters. Very Very important to know how much line is out and what lure you have on. I recommend a book called Precision Trolling. It informs you by lure how much line to let out to get to a specific depth for each specific lure. An electronic sonar with GPS features is also recommended for trolling speeds and waypoints when you find a active school. Pound the heck out a school when you find one. Drifting? Use bait walkers (weights) with worm harnesses. Paint the bait walkers orange, chatruese, etc. Your preference. You can also drift weight forward baits such as erie dearies, big johns. More hot lures are MayFly rigs, Weapons, Assisins. Most require some night crawlers attached.

If you dont want to invest in bait casting reels yet? Make sure you attach a barrel swivel about 2' up from lure. This will help prevent the line from kinking due to constant stress.

Good Luck & Good Fishing
